This picture-perfect mountain retreat was a monastery until transformed into a private palace by King Ferdinand II. The surrounding Park of Pena is just as big of a treat, full of exotic plant life and other secret treasures. Discover for yourself the 'Crown of the Sintra region'.

Originally a 16th-century monastery, Ferdinand threw out all notions of restraint and ordered its conversion into a Technicolor fairy-tale fortress. The King couldn't settle on a single style, so the castle is a delightful mishmash of Romantic, Renaissance, Manueline and Moorish styles. A must-see for fans of architecture and design (and bright colors)!

  • Due to ongoing restoration works, the Chambers of King Carlos I, the Smoking Room, Triton's Terrace and the Queen's Terrace currently have limited access and are partly covered by scaffolding
  • To access the audio-guided tour, you will have to download the app on your phone. After booking, you will receive an SMS with a direct download link for the app and audio guide
  • The Park is open from 9.00am to 7.00pm, last entry will be at 6.00pm. The National Palace of Pena is open from 9.30am to 6.30pm, last entry will be at 6.00pm
  • This is a self-guided tour, there is no tour guide at the starting point
  • The audio guide is not available for children under the age of 6

    Excellent tour but was only available to one person. Also, we wanted to go back to listen to some of the history but was no longer available.
