What to expect

Nicosia is a fascinating city to explore – offering you a glimpse of two very different worlds. This tour starts in the Cypriot southern area and passes the 'Green Line' buffer zone to explore the northern part of Nicosia.

Your first stop is the St. John's Cathedral built in Franco-Byzantine style. Next up is a walking tour through the historic streets of Laiki Geitonia inside the Venetian city walls. It's a maze of winding streets with churches, squares and ornate buildings.

After passing the Green Line, you'll hear tales of the city's history and culture as you tick off some of the main sites. Then, pass back into the southern area to Ledra Street and embrace modern city life under your own steam.

    te lange busrit, zonder op de weg iets echt bezienswaardig te noemen bezocht, grensovergang moet je meegemaakt hebben, maar verder niks te zien of te bekijken in turkse deel, wandeling in nicossia was eigenlijk een shopnamiddag in plaats van een ontdekkingstocht

    De excursie was vrij mager in totaliteit. De gids gaf wel uitgebreide historische informatie tijdens de busrit en een goede uitleg betreffende de iconen in de kerk, maar dat was ook de enige toevoeging. Bezoek aan Nicosia viel tegen, vooral het Turkse deel. Aanschaf van kleding werd strikt ontraden, controle bij retour was nihil. Busrit van 2x 2 uur was slenteren door winkelstraat niet waard.

    Deze trip viel een beetje tegen. Nicosia is zo’n bijzondere en mooie stad dat we dachten dat we daar meer onder leiding van de gids zouden zien. Bij aankomst gingen we eerst naar een kerk waar we lang wachtten om naar binnen te kunnen en vervolgens naar een museum. De kerk was op zich bijzonder, het museum voegde voor ons helemaal niks toe. Achteraf denk ik dat als je met de bus naar Nicosia gaat en zelf een wandeling voorbereidt, je net zoveel of meer plezier hebt.

    De verdeeldheid in de stad vonden we leuk om te zien. De kathederaal was erg mooi, jammer dat we er geen foto’s van mochten maken. Het stond mooier beschreven dan werkelijk, je kreeg namelijk erg veel vrije tijd en ging dan weer terug na een rit van 2.5 uur heen en terug. Ook jammer dat 2 kerken dicht waren en alleen van de buitenkant foto’s gemaakt mochten worden.

    We hebben lang in de bus gezeten (in totaal 4 uur). Een drietal gebouwen hebben we alleen aan de buitenkant gezien. De gids vertelde hier het eea over. Helaas zijn we daar niet binnen geweest. Wel zijn we binnen in de kathedraal met prachtige fresco's geweest. Na een drankje en klein hapje hadden we ruim 2 uur vrije tijd. Ik had liever gehad dat we in die tijd in 1 van de gebouwen waren geweest.
