Why you’ll love this…
  • This full-day tour is all about exploring Majorca's wild Tramuntana Mountain coastline
  • You'll visit Son Marroig estate, where Habsburg Archduke Ludwig Salvator lived
  • The views are epic from Sa Foradada and among the UNESCO-listed Serra de Tramuntana mountains
  • There's free time to wander the highland town of Valldemossa where flowers fill every balcony
  • You'll gain inside knowledge and anecdotes about Majorca's villages from your expert local guide
What to expect

The beaches are far from Valldemossa – which helps explain why it's preserved its timeless beauty. This full day tour takes you to this historic highland town as well as Son Marroig palace to discover its impressive views along the west coast of Majorca. Ramon, one of our local guides, says, ‘Son Marroig is worth a visit for its history alone, but its location is so romantic that many Majorcans get married here.'

Son Marroig is itself a love story – that of Archduke Ludwig Salvator for the island of Majorca. This scion of the Austrian Habsburgs loved it so much that he bought the estate and owned it for most of his life. He was smitten by views of Sa Foradada headland and the azure Mediterranean – they're so good they're considered among the world's top 10 coastal views. You'll learn all about him during a guided tour of the palace, which has an intriguing collection of artefacts about him – he was a renowned conservationist, a man ahead of his time. And you'll also be able to take some selfies at the white marble pavilion where lovers say, ‘I do'.

A winding and scenic drive away is Valldemossa. Stroll the plant-fringed alleys and maybe visit the Charterhouse. Classical composer Frédéric Chopin stayed here for a winter, and it boasts period drawing rooms and a leathery library. And there's enough time to stop for a coffee in a local family-owned café. Ramon adds, ‘The villages of the Tramuntana Mountains are so well-preserved that the whole range is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.'

There seemed to be a lot more German spoken than English also a bit longer in places if that can be done?

We were told that the route was a picturesque drive up the coast rather than from Palma. That didn't happen at all. We were picked up driven to Palma Hippodrome where a number of german tourists swapped coaches. From there we went up the main road. Then on our return (same route straight to Palma) there was very heavy traffic. That's fine, but we took a detour that took 20 minutes to go round 2 roundabouts just to drop the tour guide off first. A bit shoddy. Left to the driver to drop guests off

Guide was excellent (in 3 languages) but maybe a slight overload of information. Very careful and helpful driver.

The excursion was made up of English and Polish people apart from two German people whose behaviour to the guide was rude, disrespectful and frankly appalling. All because they wanted the Guide to conduct the tour in German. She made it clear that the tour would be in English and Polish. They kept harassing the guide but she stuck to her guns. Why expect a German commentary when the tour was advertised as an English tour.Well done Monica for the polite way she handled the situation.

Palma by night with optional guided tour or dinner
Activities

Palma by night with optional guided tour or dinner

By day Palma is a medieval wonderland, by night it's a radiant hive of activity. You'll be taken to Majorca's elegant capital for an evening away from your resort. Browse designer stores, dine in trendy Santa Catalina or stroll on the city walls under the Gothic cathedral. Xisco, one of our expert local guides, says, ‘La Llotja is a 600-year-old medieval exchange. It's free to visit and you can follow its twisting Gothic columns as they wind their way to the ceiling. You can also spot a ‘spy box', where spotters would look down on the crowd to see if anyone was stealing.'Arriving Palma in the early evening, you'll have about five hours to spend in the capital. You can choose to have the evening to yourselves with five hours of free time to wander at your own pace and perhaps find a place to enjoy a meal. Alternatively, you could opt to join a guided tour of the historic city to get some local insight as you weave through the amospheric streets for around 90 minutes. If you decide to book the dinner option, you'll dine in the Cellar sa Premsa restaurant at 8pm.Most shops are open late so you can visit the boutiques and high street stores around the tree-lined boulevard of Passeig d'es Born, or browse for souvenirs near the cathedral, which glows in after-dark floodlighting. Palma is a city which stays up late, and many cultural attractions such as La Llotja and Es Baluard Modern Art Museum stay open until 8 or 9pm, so you can sightsee even on an evening visit.

Valldemossa, Son Marroig and Soller tour with historic train ride

History meets scenery on this Tramuntana Mountains tour. You'll visit the honey-stone village of Valldemossa, explore handsome Soller town and enjoy the views on a vintage train ride through mountains and valleys. Xisco, one of our expert local guides, says, ‘The train is the pride of the people of Soller. Because their town was so hard to reach behind the mountains, they built the railway with their own money a century ago so they could be connected to Palma and export their famous oranges.'Kick off in Valldemossa, a cluster of stone houses tumbling from a ridge in the heart of the Tramuntana Mountains. You can either explore the village under your own steam or join a guided tour to learn more about its history and culture. Xisco adds, ‘My favourite street in Valldemossa is Carrer Rectoria, a narrow alley is lined with potted plants. Saint Catalina Thomas was born here, and her house is now a chapel.' Then it's on to Son Marroig for a guide tour of the ravishing Renaissance-style estate overlooking the sea.Next, we'll head to Soller, a busy town built by wealthy citrus fruit merchants. You'll have free time to explore, potter around the shops, pop into a church or two, or soak up the sun in an outdoor café. The day rolls to a close with a journey back in time on a wooden train inaugurated in 1912 and still in full working order today. This scenic ride weaves through the Sierra de Tramontanta to Son Reus, where you'll join the transfer back to base.
